The 2008 French Open will offer prize money of €15,575,960, an increase of more than 2% from 2007. As in 2007, the event will provide equal prize money to both men and women in all events.
The male and female singles champions will each receive one million euros or US$1,580,000 (calculated with the rate of exchange on 28th March 2008). A first round loser will receive €14,290. Equal prize money was awarded at Roland Garros for the first time last year and will again be applied across the board this year. Achieving total parity in both singles and doubles is the result of a long, determined battle led by the French Tennis Federation. Remember, in 1990, the women’s champion received only 79% of the amount awarded to the men’s champion. The greatest increase this year has been awarded to the wheelchair tennis events which feature in the official programme for the second year. Prize money for these events has increased by 60% from 2007 with the men’s and women’s champions receiving €6000. |
